I fled that place 2 years ago and i am glad i did. My mother still lives there i am trying to convince her to move also. NY is too expensive.

Success story is having the highest fatality rate of any state in the country, and by ‘state’ I mean the NYC metro area?

Funny to see the spin on this one.  People are voting with their feet when it comes to NY.

I’d never live there. Too expensive, too cluttered, too dirty, just too much. Few good restaurants and broadway shows aren’t enough to win me over.

My friend and SanFran sent me this:

Kinja'd!!!

Meanwhile up in my area (Seattle metro/sprawl), the housing market is hot again, roads are packed, and there’s this eerie feeling sometimes that everything is fine, when I wonder if its  elephant on stilts.

One of the things I’m really fearing is waves of urbanites flowing out to the  mountain west to work remotely, leaving their tax dollars in states their company is based in while we send water to said states.

So basically you're going to turn into that one South Park episode where Will Smith moves in.

SB 405 in Bellevue was backed up for a few miles at 3pm on Thursday. If all of these people are WFH, WTF is going on?  People are just driving for the sake of it, I suspect. And because of the 520 closure, it was a hilarious shitshow yesterday, thankfully I could avoid it.

Spokane and Bellingham housing markets are also going nuts right now, as Seattle metro people look to spread out a bit.

I just stay home — again. Can’t even go for a drive on Whidbey on a Sunday.

Bellingham can kiss  my booty.

It’s become like pre-COVID, I generally avoid 405 all the time now. I have the old car out today, but not leaving the area, not driving on any highway. I can hear what almost sounds like weekday traffic outside my window right now.

Pandemic, huh.

If I got a job with my Bellevue salary in Bellingham, I’d take it in an instant, although with the way it is going, it looks like I wouldn’t be able to afford a house there, either.

Housing in Bham wasn’t even cheap when I was in college. I don’t want to imagine what it’s like now.

I think I would hesitate to move there, as they have actual winters, which I've no interest in.

Rentals are a little high, but when I lived there 15-20 years ago (after school too, I forgot you’re also WWU?), you could still pick up condos for under 100K and detached houses for under 200K.   My old condo was something like 80K in 2001, when it sold for 160K in 2006 I was in shock.

I like snow, the winters don’t phase me. If we are never allowed back into Canada, that’d be a sore point though - when I was a student I was sometimes in Vancouver every weekend.

I’d also take Spokane with next to no hesitation - the areas to the east of the city are a bit iffy in terms of socio-political identity, but the city itself is underrated IMO - but it’s definitely not a buyer’s market.

We have a house in an Eastern CT town that’s just on the edge of commutable to NYC and Boston but you basically couldn’t give away for years. Prices in the neighborhood are up 25% in six months and keep going up - all apparently  NYC people buying second homes.

Compare NY to California and you’ll see what success looks like.

It’ll probably end up being like an eastern suburb of North Bend (which can also be hilariously expensive)

Yes, I went to WWU, a place so incredibly liberal that everyone treated me like I was a reincarnation of Ronald Regan, even when simultaneously my family regarded me as a godless heathen hippie.

I’ve been hearing that the rural area I go to on the weekends has been getting a lot of attention from people currently living in the nearby cities. That area didn’t have a meaningful number of COVID-19 infections until kids’ sports started up again and a team got infected at a tournament. It’s been pretty close to life as usual for most people this whole time .

Cellular coverage and internet are both spotty out there , but both have been rapidly improving over the past few years. A property where I couldn’t get any cell signal at all 2-3 years ago now has pretty good LTE service. If I could rely on continuing to be able to work entirely from home instead of having to go to client sites I’d buy a little place just outside one of the small towns (close enough to have an easy time hiring some help , far enough to be left alone) .

F or most states, that’s not how taxes work (if they’re following the law). Taxes paid to the state the work is done in.

So me states have a temporary moratorium on it if it’s WFH due to COVID. But they are temp only.

Having spent much of my life either east of the mountains or in the area closer to Evergreen State, WWU seemed like a bastion of worldly normalcy. Of course, that was around 25 years ago now.

The fact that North Bend is gentrifying is absolutely hilarious. Soon they’ll tell me the Pour House is a wine bar now.

Though I would be willing to pay a premium for proximity to Scott’s Dairy Freeze

I am sure you can find a nice 3800 sq ft mansionette made of the finest compressed oatmeal and cardboard, on an airy 4300 sq ft lot, starting in the low 1.1s. Buy now, prices will never be this low!

Heck, virtually anything in Bellevue-Redmond-Kirkland has doubled or more in the past 7-8 years.

The worst part is most who lucked out did so literally by blind luck/good timing, and now act like the second coming of Warren Buffett.

Next year is going to be interesting. There was just a bit on how companies in metro areas Washington, Boston, NYC and Phili are trying to get creative to get out of paying.

2hrs flat to midtown , 1h45 to downtown Boston, 1hr to Hartford & 45 to Providence by car . Plus commuter train options nearby and a ferry to Long Island.

I wouldn’t do it, but if you only have to go into the city once or twice a week (or if you wanted a weekend place) you could make it work.
